Caught in the Eye

Lee Friedlander’s work is simply surprising. Whether is about self-exploration or cultural statements, Friedlander is always exploring the unseen part of the reality.

Born in 1934 in Aberdeen, Washington, he studied photography at the Art Center of Los Angeles and in 1956 moved to New York City where he photographed jazz musicians. His early work was also influenced by Eugène Atget, Robert Frank, and Walker Evans. Lee was a key figure in the 1967 New Documents exhibition, at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

Nowadays, his photographs reflect a more luminescent image, and his late creations display the impact of texture which was not a feature of his older exhibitions. His latest images are more similar to those taken by Josef Sudek who also photographed the confines of his home and studio. For his achievements, Lee Friedlander received a 2005 Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography in order to gratify his visible talent.
